Tuyen Lam Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Da Lat and one of the city’s most beautiful natural attractions. Surrounded by lush pine forests, rolling hills, and small mist-covered islands, the lake offers a peaceful escape from the busy city center. Visitors can enjoy activities such as boating, camping, hiking, fishing, and sightseeing, making it an ideal destination for families, couples, and nature lovers.

History of Tuyen Lam Lake

Many visitors assume Tuyen Lam Lake is a natural lake because of its untouched beauty. In reality, it is a man-made reservoir that began taking shape in the 1930s and was later discovered by a French farmer named Farraut.
At that time, the lake lay between the majestic Elephant Mountain Range and the romantic Tia Stream, also known as the Purple Stream.
During the Vietnam War, the forests surrounding the lake served as a secret base for the People’s Army of Vietnam. The area was known as Quang Trung Zone, named after one of Vietnam’s greatest historical military leaders.
In 1987, a dam was built across Purple Stream to provide irrigation for hundreds of hectares of rice fields in neighboring Duc Trong District. The reservoir was then officially named Tuyen Lam Lake. In Vietnamese, “Tuyen” means stream, while “Lam” means forest, perfectly describing the harmonious combination of water, forest, and sky that creates this magnificent landscape.
